| Well since we have so many BC ppl here i wanted to ask
okay i'm failing in trying to get into SFU since my gpa is way too low to begin with. I'm thinking of taking my summer off and start on a portfolio and applying for arts schools or art programs i was thinking of doing the research myself but i'm not very good at it and since we also have quite the few arts students here i might as well start this and have every1 look into it at the same time for future use.
So does any1 know any places that are good for webdesign, graphic design, and maybe film production?
all i can think of is like BCIT VFS AI Emily Carr
any1 got any other schools/programs? |

| Not to hijack thread, but since its related....
Anyone here currently working in graphic design? I dropped my current program in college to switch to graphic design in sept... Mind showing a portfolio or something that got you into your program? I'm interested in what people are looking for in a graphic designer. Also, did you have to have mad drawing skills? Because my program asks me to provide a sketchbook of sorts.
I have to put together a small portfolio in only 2 months from scratch, (haha I'm sorry Tran my typesetting pace will decline even further... >.<) |

| im not a graphic design major, but i have a friend who is also planning on majoring in graphic design. From what she told me and what I see at school, many graphic designers don't have good drawing skills (pencil and paper) but they do some crazy good work on the computer. I don't know any schools in BC, but there are many good art schools in NY...unless you would prefer not to go to an entirely art based school (they're super expensive). I go to AI, media arts and animation major...eh, i don't have much to say about the school. Its more of a last resort type of school to me. Its not terrible, but I wouldn't recommend it... you'll have to see for yourself. For sketches, schools are usually more impressed by drawings from observation rather than from photos (they can tell the difference). Maybe a combo of both if you would really prefer to draw from reference photos. The most common mistake I see in some bad designs are ...designs that go way overboard. Its better to keep things minimal, simple, and clean. Also colors are super important, you just need a good eye for design. The graphic design field is extremely competitive... Its also good to have some prior experience in photoshop so u can focus on your projects rather than on how to use the program. You'll eventually have to take a photoshop course anyway, but its waay better and more fun to learn it on your own (but im assuming u guys already do since you guys are cleaners/type setters XD) This a graphic design inspiration blog my friend shared with me, its pretty helpful. http://grainedit.com/and some good works http://digitalmash.com/work |

| the sketchbook can be digital, for graphic design take a look at some fan art for some of your favourite games, that is the kind of expectations you need to work too |

| If you can program, and other things you can be fine but webdesign is not a stable occupation though. |

| Very nice @Haru Yeah, for web design that's true. Though it'd be ok as a side job or hobby. Idk about main career.
Programming... for web you wouldn't need anything like C++. And for 3d stuff isn't blender one of the easiest to use? Graphic design seems annoying, since there's so much competition...
Industrial design seems interesting. |

| 3D stuff, i think Demonspawn knows about it the best but anyway, Blender, yeah its easy to use but I think college gives you the training of how to work with MAYA, and other programs. You get use to the difficulty of the programs and you get the hang of it :U! Industrial Design? :U Engineering...? *shot* |

| okay guys it's not that great since it's isn't freehanded it's projected traced then colored my free hand work are other manga drawings that i don't color
my art teacher from highschool tends to let us walk into his class after school and let us use his projector to trace out whatever i want to color out.
btw you mean 3d designing i took animation back in gr9 in highschool i know the basics in using Maya but i took alot of different courses in highschool
let's see: yearbook, media arts, film production, art class, and animation

| Those are good classes to know the basis of art, oh yeah! FILM PRODUCTION! Film Production there are a lot of openings I think! Cameramen, and all of that stuff you guys can work as, a good stable career if not in the drawing career (such as 2D animation) |

| Oh cool. I've only taken 3d art(namely pottery, and things like that), and photography(Though the teacher doesn't teach as such.)
I haven't really done anything useful....... rofl. Website building, I did it as a hobby last year. Uhm, for portfolio things. I guess a list of things: Website designs. Pottery Drawings/sketchbook Short films/scripts Photos
What else can we submit?? o_o

| this might be outdated info, but yeah compared to a lot of other art/design careers web designers get one of the highest pays. Ugh speaking of maya, im currently learning how to use it and omg its such a pain in the butt. I feel like such a noob im also trying to build a portfolio website right now ...ugh so lazy. |

| Well, it depends on what you want to do, If it's 2D art all I can say is DON'T go to The Art Institute. If you want 3D modelling, Game Design or Programming, Ai isn't bad, VFS is also good for those regions, however programming at BCIT would be better, 2D art I hear VFS is good I don't know about their 3D modelling parts though. (Haven't taken it there though lol so I could be wrong)
The reasons for Ai, it's quick and you're in the industry. The reasons against Ai, your portfolio will look like shit at the end. (I should know ( -.-)')
Oh, and PS: people at Ai tend to look down on those who draw manga/anime style art, just a heads up. |
